How to add Kartradar to your home screen as an app

Kartradar can be used as an app without downloading anything: its own icon, straight into the map and no address bar. Here is how on Android and iPhone.

Kartradar is a website, but it can be added to your home screen and used as an app: its own icon, opening straight into the map, with no address bar or browser buttons. You do not need to download anything from Google Play or the App Store. It takes less than a minute.

Why do it

It is still the same website, so everything is always up to date. There is no app version that needs updating, and nothing is stored on the phone beyond what the browser normally does.

Fastest: the button in the menu

On most Android phones there is a "📲 Install as app" button in the menu on the map, just below the search field. Tap it, and the phone opens its own installation with the Kartradar icon. If you use Samsung Internet, the button is called "📲 Install via Chrome" and opens Kartradar in Chrome, where installation works (see below). If you do not see the button, Kartradar is either already installed, or your browser does not support it. In that case, follow the steps below.

Android with Samsung Internet

Samsung Internet is the default browser on Samsung phones. There is one trap here.

Do not use "Install as web app" in Samsung Internet. On Android 14 and newer, Google Play Protect stops it with a message saying an unsafe app has been blocked because it was built for an older version of Android. It is not Kartradar that is unsafe: Samsung wraps the website in an app built for an old Android version, and it is that wrapper Android reacts to. The problem is known to Samsung. If you get the message, tap "OK", not "Install anyway".

Recommended: install from Chrome instead. Tap "📲 Install via Chrome" in the menu on the map, or open kartradar.no in Chrome yourself, and follow the steps under "Android with Chrome". It then becomes a normal app, with no warning.

If you want to stay in Samsung Internet, you can add a shortcut to the home screen. It gets the Kartradar icon, but opens the site in the browser, with the address bar.

  1. Open kartradar.no and tap the three dots in the bottom right.
  2. Choose "Add page to".
  3. Choose "Home screen", and confirm with "Add".

Android with Chrome

  1. Open kartradar.no in Chrome and tap the three dots in the top right.
  2. Choose "Install app". In some versions of Chrome it is called "Add to Home screen", and the "Install" option then appears in the next step.
  3. Confirm with "Install".

iPhone and iPad

Apple does not let websites show an install button, so on iPhone and iPad it is done through the share menu.

  1. Open kartradar.no in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button: the square with an arrow pointing up. On iPhone it is at the bottom of the screen, on iPad at the top.
  3. Scroll down in the menu and choose "Add to Home Screen".
  4. Tap "Add" in the top right.

From iOS 16.4 it also works from Chrome and other browsers on iPhone, via the share button in the address bar.

How to remove it

Hold your finger on the Kartradar icon until a menu appears, and choose "Uninstall" or "Remove App". It is the same as removing a bookmark: nothing else on the phone is affected.
